History:
Serving as the missile armament of the Gnerl Fighter Pods, the Mitten series of missiles is the smallest Zentraedi missile save for the Maggot, yet retains an excellent performance. It is also one of the 'newer' Zentraedi designs, despite being already almost 450 years old.
The Mitten comes in four versions; two of these are identical save for the warhead composition. The third variant is a hypervelocity version, sacrificing part of its range for additional speed in order to catch hypersonic enemy mecha. The fourth has a standard rocket engine and is used only outside an atmosphere; the Mitten-DFRAG is optimized for space usage. The A and B series Mitten warheads are based on a kinetic penetrator design, with a hardened warhead capable of piercing the outer armor of most mecha before exploding. The C version carries a plasma warhead, and the D version a space optimized fragmentation warhead. Unusual for a missile is that the missile is capable of active as well as passive radar homing, combining the functions of an AAM and an ARM in one design.
As with most Zentraedi missiles, the engine section with the radar aerials is mounted behind the warhead and air-intake section. The hypervelocity version is the favored anti-mecha missile, the other missiles are used against ground targets as often as against aerial targets.
