In the mid twenties, the Southern Cross issued a specification for a smaller version of the Derringer missile, to be used in both air-to-air and air-to-ground/ship modes. The missile would mostly be used by the Falcon and Sylphid series of aircraft, which could not carry the relatively large Derringer in any numbers. The result was the Python missile, which combined accurate homing with a reasonable range. However, the major compromise that had to be accepted was the smaller warhead.
In combat against the Robotech Masters, the Python proved to be incapable of reliably bringing down assault carriers, and had no effect whatsoever against the Motherships. Against the Invid, any mecha hit was a certain kill, but because of the size of this missile, fewer could be carried than had the craft been equipped with smaller, more numerous but still effective missiles such as the Hammerhead or Diamondbacks. The Python has thus the unlucky reputation to be either too small or too large, and no plans exist to build further missiles in this size/weight category.
