The Brimstone was used in the Global Civil War as the main helicopter launched anti-armor missile. As such, it was the follow-on of the Hellfire and TOW missiles in the West, and the AT-6 Spiral in the former East. The RDF adopted the missile upon its formation. About as large as the TOW, the Brimstone had a speed of Mach 2.0, a definite improvement over earlier missiles, a range of 9 km, which was quite sufficient for battlefield purposes, and the possibility for both launch-and-forget IIR guidance or the very accurate semi-active laser guidance, with the guidance being provided by the launching helicopter, or by another platform equipped with a laser designator. Unlike a HEAT-warhead armed missile, however, the Brimstone was a top- attack missile, programmed to pass over a target, and had two self- forging slugs that were fired down through the thin top armor of a fighting vehicle.
The Brimstone was used by the RDF from 2001 to 2023. Though quite effective against Terran armor, the missile was less effective against Zentraedi mecha until improved software with flight characteristics tailored against Zentraedi mecha was introduced. The Southern Cross Tactical Corps also used the missile, for the duration of its existence.
